Talking Poop over Dinner
By Pamela C
Having a baby changes everything. It is so cliché but it is also true. Your focus is suddenly turned to this completely helpless, adorable, heart-stealing infant. You shop for tiny outfits, make sure every person that touches your infant washes their hands first and you have suddenly become the safest drive on the road. That is just the surface of the issue. There are a few changes that are not only unexpected but a little bizarre.
Way too many conversations in my house are focused entirely on what oozes, squirts or otherwise escapes that tiny little body. There are many in-depth talks about how many times and what type of poop the baby has accomplished. Make no mistake, each BM is an accomplishment worthy of praise and/or scrutiny. We have even named a few of the more common types. Play-doh poop is good; pellets could be a sign of constipation. Now before you were a parent talking about this type of topic in general would be uncomfortable, weird and maybe a little gross, but remember having a baby changes everything.
One of the most hilarious things your baby will likely do in the early weeks is to sprinkle the person changing them with a little baby-made urine. It is bound to happen at least once; it is just a matter of who will get it and how. In our case it was one of my husband's guy friends who was, ironically, changing the first diaper of his life. His wife laughed hysterically and took pictures while my son christened him. He may be ruined for life. Of course, this story was shared with many other friends and family members. If you think about it, how many times in your life can you laugh when someone pees on you?
