Bloggers Are Not Real Writers And People Who Write On The Internet Are Not True Professionals

August 11th , 2008

by Marsha Maung

Says who? I am deeply, deeply, gravely offended that as a freelance writer who has published countless, COUNTLESS articles on reputable websites, blogs and online ezines that I may be denied the right to consider myself a 'writer'.

So who are these people who claim that people who write on the Internet are not real writers? Established authors? Some kind of writing association? Perhaps some kind of International authority on writing and publishing?

Do you know how hard it is for people to get published? You don’t? Try giving it fifteen years…well, unless you’re lucky or willing to pay a really good literary agent to get your book into a publisher’s door. Otherwise, it all ends up in a ceiling-high pile that is destined for the trash can.

True, there are too many writers on the Internet today. Even students or people who can’t string two words together can call themselves a ‘writer’ these days. But if you look hard enough, you’ll eventually find one that counts for something. And these are really writers! Even then, I don’t mind sharing the title of being a writer with the bad ones, granted I share the title with the good ones. It’s really befuddling why internet writers are seldom considered real writers when some of them make really good sense?

What’s the standard, if there is one, then please lead me to the page because I would like to know if I fit the bill too or if I am worthy of being called a ‘real’ writer.

Some bloggers are really good because they write incredibly good blog content that entertains people. If a movie is not a conventional type of movie but it entertains, is it considered a ‘real’ movie? Are the actors considered ‘real’ actors? Oh. Yeah. They’re called B-grade movies or low-budget flicks. But then again, if a script for a movie is really bad, is the script even a ‘real’ script?

Bloggers, in fact, are often stereotyped as an obnoxious bunch of people who’s got a lot to say about everything but don’t often know what they’re talking about. Why should be bloggers considered writers? Perhaps there should some form of governing body that helps determine whether a blogger is a blogger and a blogger is a writer…or whether a writer is merely a blogger or the writer is a ‘real writer’. If you’re confused, imagine what is going through my mind at this precise moment.

I have to admit that the standard for writing is close to deplorable these days with a huge number of people entering the freelance writing world with less than two-cents worth of knowledge and skill…but not everyone’s like that.

A real writer is someone who can communicate a story or message in the form of words that either

  • impresses
  • makes sense
  • don’t talk cow language
  • informs
  • noteworthy

On whether they use the right language or not or if their vocab is as powerful as the next literature expert is beyond the point. The point is, if someone, a blogger or a freelance writer can write in a way that delivers the message properly, then be it…they ARE real writers.
